I really enjoy a day to just enjoy the sun, roll in the dirt, eat grass, and watch the people and horses at the farm.

The autumn is the best - the temperature is pleasant, not hot and not cold, and the bugs are mostly gone.

I don't know why people go on vacation so much in the summer - fall is the most pleasant time to be outside.

My son, Pulsar, seems to really be enjoying himself - don't you think?

I am a sitting duck in this sparkling white coat! I'm going for camo and you want me to stick out like a sore thumb!

This clean odorless smell is not my scent! I'm working hard at developing a strong identifying scent and you keep washing it off.

Clean itches! I had to really grind my back and neck into the mud to stop the itching and you just removed it.

I was trying for the tough Bad Boy look. White stands for pure and good - you are really killing my style with this clean white coat.

I hate to see you wasting your time. I would be happy to debut a new color of Paint Horse - Green, White, and Brown - and your life would be much easier!

I will not perform better if I am clean. Maybe you should see what happens with a dirty horse :)

You have more than enough pictures of me clean and white. You have lots of memories of the shiny white coat - now leave me alone.

The mares don't care. They like me just the way I am - in any of my color schemes.

If I were any other color you would not even know about most of the dirt and spots. And you would be happy with that -

Because - You Really Don't Want To Give Me Another Bath!

I know that the arena is not where I normally get to have visits with mares before mounting the dummy, but a stallion is always on the lookout for a mare who is ready.

I also know that if I am under saddle with a rider that there will be no visiting. I don't pay too much attention to the mares under saddle unless they are paying attention to me and then I usually just give them a little peak or nicker when I go by.

A mare standing around the arena without a saddle is a little confusing for me especially if she is noticing me. The mares in the paddock next to the outdoor arena can be very distracting! Sometimes they come over to the fence and watch and even call out to me. It is all I can do to watch where I am going, but if I can ignore them long enough they usually leave.

So please, if you have a mare in or near an arena where a stallion is working - keep her saddle on and focused on her work and he will do the same. A bare backed mare can be an enticing invitation for a stallion. Even the gentleman who knows she is not for him is having a hard time keeping his attention where it belongs.

Mares under saddle are off limits. So is a stallion - some mares don't seem to have gotten this message.

I think that the reasoning behind this part of the saying is that you can't or shouldn't tell a stallion what to do.

I would agree with that - just try using a crop on my rump and see what that gets you!

I like for my rider to listen and be quiet. Don't be squeezing and jabbing my sides, jerking me in the mouth, or popping me with that whip. Less is more with a stallion.

I am a very sensitive guy and I can feel every move you make, hear your breathe and heart beat, and smell your emotions. That's what stallions are supposed to do - watch, listen, and smell for the protection of the herd.

I usually know what you want before you ask. But if I don't understand - I know your intent and will try to please. I want adoration, appreciation, courtesy, and consideration - don't you?

Respect a Stallion.

Next week will be the last post in this series of Stallion Wisdom. Let me know how you like it so far in the comments below.

I should hope so! And do it really nice, and say "please" and "thank you".

A mare usually lets you know just what she thinks about everything. She knows what she wants and what she doesn't want, and she will always let you know her opinion. If she doesn't think you are listening she will sometimes just ignore you, if you push and make her angry know that she does not make empty threats - something will happen - and it will probably not be good. If she says "no" - try another way - little things can make all the difference.

Details are important to a mare, so if you are going to be asking her for something, you need to pay close attention. When she sees that you are listening and giving her the respect she deserves, she will be willing to listen and pay attention to you. And when you get that from her - she gives it 100%. A mare will form really strong bonds with those she trusts and respects. It is truly a relationship to treasure.

Cherish a Mare.

This must be based on an assumption that the lack of hormones in a gelding means he has no feelings or opinion and does not care how he is treated.

Assume - ass / u / me....know a gelding that proved that clever word true?

Your gelding may be able to focus better and listen longer, but no horse likes to be treated with a lack of respect. He's letting you ride him - be grateful and show him some courtesy. He will respond in kind.

Love a Gelding.

Tell a gelding
Ask a mare
Discuss it with a stallion

Humans like to put things in groups and make judgements about the group instead of just seeing each thing individually. This is sad because it prevents them from finding the truth.

Polaris, my 1st colt, (he's a gelding now) born in 2004 showed 3rd Level Dressage this past weekend with scores in the 60's, winning the 1st class with a 66%. I'm pretty sure this was his 1st time out at 3rd Level.

Pleiades, Priscillsa, and Cain - are out in the hunter rings willing ribbons and showing what great 5 and 6 year old horses they are. Their owners love them and it is so nice to see everyone so happy.

Petite Belle, who qualified for the 4 year old USEF/Markel Young Horse Championships last year, was showing at 1st Level with scores in the 60's and 70's. She will probably be at Regional Finals this year.

And this year there are two 3 year olds, Pierre and Pluto, that are expected to be showing later this summer at Training Level. Not a lot of 3 year olds showing Training Level, but several of mine have :).

Here's Pluto showing his stuff on the lunge:
Cabana Boy was a young horse with a lot of promise. This kind of tragic accident can make people afraid to turn out their expensive, talented horses. I think that all horses should have some time to just be a horse, no matter what they cost or their future potential. They should not spend their lives locked up or under saddle every day. She will not be grey. Her dam, Pleiades, did not pass my grey gene and so the filly, Felicity, will be bay. She is getting darker and darker every day.

Four of my fillies went to shows this year and won ribbons in Dressage and Baby Green Hunters. They were only 3 and 4 years old! Two more of my foals were Premium at the inspection and one of my 3 year old mares, Petite Belle, is a Premium Mare in the ISR/Oldenburg N.A. registry. I don't have a lot of offspring, but the ones I have are very smart, easy to train, and athletic. You should really get one of your own!
I like the attention, but I miss my mares and foals and especially my paddock! The last two weeks I have been going in the rings with the jumps. This is much more fun than the rings with the little fences! Jumping is easy, but I'm not too crazy about the braids they put in my mane! I have been getting special massages and lots of treats - it's really not so bad - but I do hope that I will be going home soon!
