Maryland Will Miss… Cabana Boy

This is so sad. Cabana Boy was a young horse with a lot of promise. This kind of tragic accident can make people afraid to turn out their expensive, talented horses. I think that all horses should have some time to just be a horse, no matter what they cost or their future potential. They should not spend their lives locked up or under saddle every day. It is good that even though Cabana Boy's life was cut short, he was allowed the time for fun, joy, and freedom of being a horse!

My deepest sympathies to everyone at Hilltop Farm - I hope you find comfort in the knowledge that Cabana Boy had a wonderful life with you!

Felicity - 2010 Premium Filly

My 1st granddaughter was born this year. Her sire is Festrausch and she is very cute and friendly. She will not be grey. Her dam, Pleiades, did not pass my grey gene and so the filly, Felicity, will be bay. She is getting darker and darker every day.

Four of my fillies went to shows this year and won ribbons in Dressage and Baby Green Hunters. They were only 3 and 4 years old! Two more of my foals were Premium at the inspection and one of my 3 year old mares, Petite Belle, is a Premium Mare in the ISR/Oldenburg N.A. registry. I don't have a lot of offspring, but the ones I have are very smart, easy to train, and athletic. You should really get one of your own!

Horse Sports by the Bay

I have been at the horse show in Traverse City for weeks! I like the attention, but I miss my mares and foals and especially my paddock! The last two weeks I have been going in the rings with the jumps. This is much more fun than the rings with the little fences! Jumping is easy, but I'm not too crazy about the braids they put in my mane! I have been getting special massages and lots of treats - it's really not so bad - but I do hope that I will be going home soon!

What's the big deal? I'm a stallion - so what?

The way some people act around me you would think I was breathing fire and standing on my hind legs.

I can clear out a wash rack at a show just by nickering at a mare. People are afraid to come near me or touch me. They act like they think I will eat them! I'll happily take their apples, carrots, and treats, but they will never feel my teeth.

I'm a male horse. Lots of male humans act much worse than me. Give me a break!

I won't make any promises about mares that tease me - I am a breeding stallion and I would not be very good at my job if I ignored that!

Yes, I like attention and I'm good at getting it - that's what I'm supposed to do. Besides, I am beautiful!

But basically, I'm a horse. A warmblood, sweet, curious, good natured, easy going, and very affectionate horse!

A Mare Under Saddle in the Arena

Today I am working under saddle and a mare comes into the arena with a person at her side. I know that when I am under saddle there is no visiting with the mares, but I can't resist a low nicker as I trot past. She noticed!

Then she starts working under saddle, too. Each time we pass I turn my ear to her to see if she is noticing me. At first she just ignores me - then the ears start going back and she gives me dirty looks! What?! I'm not going to try anything. I just want her to notice how great I look.

At shows sometimes there are so many mares in the ring that I have trouble paying attention to my rider so I have to work really hard and I'm not good at dividing my attention. That means that I have to start paying a lot of attention to my rider so she will be happy and I can get a break. This usually gets me a lot of attention and sugar.

I'm a little confused about a mare under saddle - it's OK for a rider to mount her but not me!

Stallions Do Not Like To Be Cold

I am remembering that day when we worked out in the field but --

Now it is COLD!

I was sweating when I was under saddle so she clipped by hair (I love being clipped) and I am wearing a fleece, a blanket, and a neck wrap.

On that day I could dry off outside and roll in the dirt and manure --

Now it is FROZEN!
And I am STILL COLD!

When I go outside I have to run around a bit, but then I just go into my run-in shed and watch for someone to come out and bring me in. Then I run to the gate when I see them coming and just to be sure that they get me first I call out and paw at the gate. I would be happy if they would just leave me inside.

I can't wait for spring! Mud, mares, and manure!

Acupuncture For Horses

Today they came into my stall and stuck lots of little needles in my back and it felt really good. I really like to be rubbed on and there was lots of that also, before and after the needles. My tight back felt more relaxed when I was working later. I hope they do this often!

Stallion Happiness

I love attention.

I love treats (especially peppermints!)

I love to have my face petted and rubbed. After I work it really feels good when she uses a warm towel all over my head!

I love to be groomed.

I love to roll in the nastiest pile I can find.

I love to have lots of activity all around me.

I love to rub on mares (but only if they stand still and don't try to kick me!)

I love to make soft nickers at the mares as they pass by.

I love children - they usually have treats and pet my nose.

I love to run and buck and show off when I am turned loose in my paddock.

I love to watch over my herd.

I love the smells of my farm.

I love to take naps.

I love the silly looking breeding phantom (as long as a real mare is next to it).

I love being a stallion!

These warning signs might be funny to you, but I know from experience that this thing is easy to fall off of if the mare decides to move where I can't touch her with my nose. That rough carpet keeps it from being too slippery.

I don't think that any of my explosions would kill anyone, but I do sometimes break the plastic bag!

I Am the Stallion of This Herd

I have been letting all the people and horses here know that I am the stallion of this herd. The mares all seem to get the message and they try to stop and visit with me on their way to other places. The boys just don't seem to get my message. The people walk them past without giving me any attention and when I charge the fence to be sure that the other horse knows who is in charge here, they yell at me and move the horse to the other side. I'm only doing my job. One minute they want me to act like a stallion and the next I am supposed to forget it - they need to make up their minds. I am a nice guy, I know when I have on all the equipment for them to ride me that I am supposed to pay attention to all their little signals and not notice the other horses, but I can only do that for so long, and sometimes I just have to take a little peak or give a quiet nicker. This is breeding season after all! They do seem to have figured that one out, though - finally. She is giving me lots of pats and treats, especially when the equipment is on - that really helps me to focus - on the treats that is!

Today it was quiet and I went out and worked without the jumps - it was an easy day and then I went out to my paddock and let everyone know I was there. Then I rolled in the dirt because I like to be any color other than white, besides it was hot and I was itchy. Dirt and grass make good places to scratch off those pesty flies and bugs and the clean skin itch from all those baths! I need to smell right. How else are they going to know that I am the stallion of this herd and not a human?

The Breeding Dummy

They call it the breeding dummy. It seems to me that they are the dummies! I don't mind. I like to play the game and jump the dummy with the real mare standing next to it. And afterward I get treats, pats, and the day off to do whatever I want.

I don't know what they think they are doing, but somehow new foals keep appearing!

Stallions Don't Want to Be White

Today I was outside almost the whole time that the sun was out. This gives me lots of time to camouflage myself with mud and manure so that my bright white coat doesn't give me any unwanted attention. I kinda of wish that it had been a little more sparkly when the girls went buy because I had to do a lot of dancing and nickering to get their attention. They were impressed with me, of course, but that silver sparkle might have made them stop to look longer. Hopefully, this year we will have a chance to do more than just look at each other.

My new paddock has plenty of grass, so I am ignoring the hay they left - it is a nice pile to pee on, though. The green grass provides another color to add to my camouflage, too. I think that I will hold out for a treat again today when she comes to bring me in - it's fun to run away and buck just when she thinks she has me, but I really like those peppermints, and besides there is yummy grain waiting in my stall!
